This movie was also the product of the inquiry-based project. Students chose a protest song, then answered the following essential question through a movie:
What conclusions can you draw from an artist's personal beliefs, public sentiment, and the culture of the era expressed through his/her song?
Please describe your immediate thoughts on this movie and how you could adapt this type of project for one of your future classes.

I think this is an awesome idea for older elementary education or junior high students. This is something that students can easily learn how to do because it is a step-by-step process and it also gives students a chance to find inspiration in music. More importantly, creating a protest movie opens doors for students to look at the issues in today's society compared to the issues in our history. If students feel strongly about a topic they will put more effort into it and find it enjoyable. In the article, "Using Digital Video to Enhance Learning" many teachers discuss the use of digital videos in the classroom. One teacher, Helen Walker, states, "Our task now is to make sure that all teachers have access to good quality advice about what works with digital video and in the classroom." Bob Overton, another teacher, says "The children get a lot out of using digital video." I think this type of digital video, a protest song, is encouraging, inspiring, and a good way for students to become active learners.

This digital story is a great resource to use in the classroom. It is very useful in helping children and getting them active in the classroom. I feel that the use of digital storytelling will help get students involved and excited about their work. The movie allows for children to step away from their everyday work and learn about using new technology. I would use digital storytelling in my classroom to teach lesson plans. For example, if I was doing a lesson plan in Literature I could do a movie on the author or story we are covering. Many students don't pay attention to the authors of the books they are reading. With the use of digital storytelling I could give them background information on the author and integrate some music from their era. I found a website that talked about digital storytelling in the classroom. It talked about how students can combine what their stories with the use of web tools, audio and graphics that is user friendly. The students can use the videos as a reflection of what they learned and can communicate to others with their movies. Students have a variety of options with using digital storytelling, the options are endless. I feel that the use of movies in the classroom is a great way to introduce students to new technologies and is very useful. I am excited at the prospect of using this technology in my classroom! http://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu/index.html
I have been in classes that use a lot of inspiring videos like this one, and I think it has really helped me learn about what we talk about in class and it was very interesting. The nice thing about using videos like these is it allows students to relate what they learn to their lives. I would use these in my classroom as much as I could, to show students what there is out in the real world for them to apply what they learn to their everyday life. When I was looking for a website, I was on the Apple sight and read about a lot of things that can be used for every subject. There is stuff students could use to better understand how to write their paper, organize it, and finalize it. Science is a little hard to have via technology of a computer, but there is a way around that, and computers and other technologies are very useful for all subjects and all ages as well.

Digital storytelling is so engaging and exciting kids don't even realize they're learning. In my article I liked the way the teacher structured the project for her class. She used a method the kids were familiar with . She grouped them as she would for literature circles. This would be a great modification for younger students to work together and complete a movie.

Excellent comments! Each of you can see a use for digital movies in the classroom and cited your source for research and literature that is available to support your ideas! Nice job!
Digital story telling is a good way for children to learn because it's different from other teaching strategies. It's more exciting and will keep their attention longer than something like a lecture or power-point. It is also easy for children to relate to the music because it is in the recent music culture. Digital story telling will catch the attention of students more than any other teaching method. If the topic seemed boring to the student, a digital story may catch their attention more and they will learn and remember the information longer and easier. I will use digital story telling for very broing topics so there is a greater chance for my students to rememebr and learn. Using the digital story telling with spice up learning atmosphere.
I think the idea for digital storytelling is great. The film, as opposed to the idea of using a textbook or traditional story, offers a way to express emotion through song, multiple pictures, and videos. People that belong to one culture can express their emotional ties to their religion or way of life, and incorporate it into events they are experiencing. For example, this video talked about events in 2003 and the way it related to the song "Where is the love?"
Children now are using digital storytelling to express how they feel in Israel during their time of terrorist war activity. They can talk about artwork, film, and more. It is a great achievement within the classroom.

i love the idea for kids who are old enough to know that current events are going on. i feel that people pf all ages need to know what is going on. i think it is a great idea to keep students attention. according to the university of Huston web page "digital storytelling is much like regular story telling it has a purpose" i feel that while you can have the students make their own current movie, it can also be used to teach different parts of history and the issues being faced then.
I feel digital stories are a great way to bring technology into a classroom. As defined by the website I used, “Digital Storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. ” I believe using digital stories will make learning more fun for children because it can contain different forms of technology. Some digital stories may contain a mixture of, “…computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips, and music.” One thing I really like about digital stories is you can use them for teaching different topics. I feel students will gain more from watch a digital story, rather than a teacher lectured. With the new wave of children coming through, I believe digital stories are going to become more and more popular.

I think this would be a great project for junior high students. For one they will be probably using a new program like imovie that they have never used before. Also students in the junior high have been experimenting with computers for a long time now so they would be able to pick this stuff up very quickly. This would be a great way to motivate your students and keep them focused on what you are trying to teach them.

I feel that these types of video storytelling would be and excellent way for students to dig deep into specific topics. This would take something that students enjoy(music) and incorporate it into the curriculum. This would give the students a sense of enjoyment while they are learning about specific events in history such as wars and other important historical events to "pop/modern culture". Kajder and Swenson (2004) in our text say that creating these movies will also motivate student writing with video projects and this makes perfect sense. It is obvious that I learn more about a specific subject when I have to spend considerable time with the material and make a project or teach that material. I feel that both of these types of digital storytelling would be an excellent source of teaching in my classroom.
I think that this kind of project would be awesome to do with jr high or high school students. Students now days are very into technology and creating things on computers. I think this project would appeal to them a lot and that they would get a lot out of it. I also know the musical aspect would appeal to them too. This would be a great chance for them to learn about the history of protest songs and their favorite songs. It also would be great for them to learn how to edit media and use technology in the classroom. Projects where students can get really involved and use technology can enhance education of today. According to digitalmediaintheclassroom.com, teachers need to shift from "knowledge-bearers to educational media producers". As learning facilitators, teachers enable students to conduct research, formulate conclusions and concepts, and articulate insights and proposals through multimedia activities. Education here will be delivered through real-world applications. That is very important because students need to be able to use what they learn in the real world. They also will take it more seriously if they know it has actual meaning to them and that it will better them.

Please remember all the concepts presented in your literature, such as "educational media producers, learning facilitators, real-world applications, because that will be our focus when we start talking about student-centered instruction.
I think that making digital movies would give students a good outlet to vent feelings and thoughts that they may not otherwise know how to express. Words do not always come easy to students but making a movie like this gives them a great way to express their feelings and thoughts.
