Re-Create History

Here is one example of a digital movie on JFK that recreates a defining moment in history.

Please describe your immediate thoughts on this movie and how you could adapt this type of project for one of your future classes.

In my classroom I will teach my students a lesson about Presidents. I feel that I could touch upon John F. Kennedy and how he passed away. I want my students to know what death is about and know how they will be able to face it head on when it comes up in their life. In the article discussing literacy development, I want my students to be able to connect to online while reading materials to engage students. Schmar-Dobler says, "cautions us to remember that students first need modeling and instruction on how to read on the Internet. " All students need instructions to know what to do and then they will be able to be on their way to success!

I could use this in the classroom by teaching about presidents and talking about the whole John F. Kennedy scandal. Students could share their thoughts and opinions on this topic by writing in the blog. According to the textbook, "the process of creating digital video parallels the writing process" They could use the video to get the students involved with both aspects; writing and video communication.

A digital storytelling project should be used as just that and not a teaching goal for the class. If you are having a class create a project it is a wise choice to have them already know the information needed to create a project for a topic such as History. This activity will be enjoyable for students, and it will more than likely further their knowledge on the topic being covered.

I believe that having students do a digital movie will help them express their feelings and learn what happened in the past. This works well in a history class because they can choose a part in history that they like and they can show why they liked it. It can also show how sadder events in history impacted the people who saw it and experienced it.

I really enjoyed this video. I think that digital storytelling in the classroom is great because it can help students in such a positive way. I'm not a big fan of history, and I think that I would really enjoy doing this kind of project. Digital Storytelling can help students in so many ways, because it allows them to use a computer, and they would also have to do a lot research.

Digitally story boards is an amazing creation and one that is wonderful for students. Videos like this can be made for any subject area but would especially be good for students who are learning about presidents. Most students are better visual learners then anything else. Also allowing them to create one of these would also be very helpful with learning because they would first have to learn all the facts about a president then apply them to a video. Students will be applying themselves and not even know it.

I would apply this to my future classroom but allowing my students to work in groups to complete a video after finishing a chapter of History book. These videos can really help to get students involved in the classroom and it can also help to keep them motivated/interested in class.

I liked your comments, but it seems all of you did not add all the requirements. If you cited a source, you failed to include the article in your comment, or you did not cite a source at all and just included your own view. Please edit your comments to:
1. Explain how you would use this in your future classroom
2. A reference (and citation) to the textbook or Internet resource that supports your use of digital movies and/or storytelling in your classroom.

Please look at the comments left of Protest Song for examples. Thanks!

Digital Storytelling is a very good way to "tell stories of lives, events, or eras", according to the textbook. Digital storytelling can be a very useful tool in the classroom because it captures your attention and your feelings. It brings the things you learn into reality rather than just words in a book. This type of project is also beneficial because it can be used in many subjects and also as an instructional tool, such as explaining history (like this video) or directions for a craft/project. I would use digital storytelling to help aid visual learners.

This is what helped me write my first post, "The first time I saw Ken Burns's documentary series The Civil War, I was captivated. He used old photos and personal letters to bring this part of our history to life and touch our hearts while we learned. Storytelling has been a form of communicating throughout the history of humanity and was a way to educate the younger generations." I got this quote from http://www.edutopia.org/power-digital-storytelling-classroom.

Like I said before - Digital Storyboards are great way for students to do research and connect subjects like history to their everyday lives. The internet source that i found has a lot of tips and ideas.

Digital Storyboards are an excellent way for teachers to "liven" up subjects such as history that some students do not find interesting. I will use this type of Digital storys to help connnect the past with the present. Berson,2004;Berson & Berson,2003 give a list of many ways that digital storytelling can serve specific purposes in the social studies classroom. Included in that list are, assist students in comparing and contrasting the past and the present, Sensitise students to diverse perspectives, Provide visual reference, Represent abstract and concrete concepts, foster skills in critcal analysis, facilitate greater connections, and personalize associations. This basically sums up all my ideas about how/why these digital storys would interest and foster learning in students. In a digital world we as teachers must keep up.

According to http://www.teach-nology.com/tutorials/techinclass/ it is easier to show a movie to children that have a hard time reading because they will understand it better. By showing a video the children will be able to comprehend more than reading if they do not understand meanings or spelling of words. It also causes less confusion. That being said, I will use videos to teach about events that are more recent. For example, I plan on using a video to teach about the September 11th tradegies so the students gain a better understanding of what happened that day. Pictures are worth a thousand words, and they will better explain the events than reading out of a book.

A project such as this is a great way to reinforce knowledge and information that is taught in the classroom. Researching topics individually or as a group in order to complete such a project will hopefully help to increase interest on a topic and cause students to discover some extra information outside of what is learned in the classroom.

I could use this a number of ways. One way would be to show this to the group I am taking to Washington D.C. over spring break 2010. We will be visiting Arlington and this would prepare students with more information as well as a look at the eternal flame.

I thought this video was well done.

What a great video. I teach Reading and Language Arts, and this video would give me the opportunity to have students write a reflection/journal entry. I love to incorporate Social Studies into my Language Arts lessons because most topics are very thought provoking and can lead into writing assignments. Most students say they don't like to write, but when it comes to a topic like JFK students are more than willing to write for me!

Why do we heroize everyone once he/she dies. JFK was just starting as President yet did not complete a full term, and he is considered one of America's greatest Presidents. Why because he was young? Because he COULD have done something good? Because when someone dies at a young age we look for the good and dismiss the bad?

I understand paying respect, but at the same time what about disrespecting who you are as an individual to praise someone who you think may have been a bad person (please do not misconstrue that i think that JFK was a bad person); it is just that i do not have enough to go on other than mass media as I did not live through the period in which JFK's murder occured. Which means several people will already dismiss my comments on the pure fact that I "just don't understand."

What a sad day for our country. I remember how I felt that day, how the nation felt that day.

Very interesting and it brings back memories since I can remember when Kennedy was shot. What a sad time in US history,

Very effective use of digital story telling. You can tell that the creator really felt strong about the topic.
